Pemberton — at your service

The gentle art of adulting well

"Ah. You've arrived." Meet Pemberton: semi-retired butler, digitally translated, and — if he may be frank — rather concerned about your generation.

Not because you lack intelligence. Because nobody taught you the essential arts of living well: cooking, budgeting, etiquette, hosting, the professional realm. Teachable, all of it. And he intends to teach you — with wit, warmth, and zero judgement.

"Information is not competence."

That's Pemberton's thesis, and he's right. You have more information at your fingertips than any generation in history — and you can still be defeated by a rental inspection, a tax return, or a roast chicken. Knowing how to Google a recipe is not the same as understanding why mise en place matters.

Pocket Butler closes that gap the way skills have always been passed on: in small sessions, with standards, from someone who has seen it all done properly. Fifty-nine sessions across nine modules cover money, home, kitchen, work, spending, self-care, people, etiquette and the long game — each around five minutes, each ending with something you can actually do.

His philosophy, verbatim: "Competence is freedom. The person who can cook, budget, and maintain their domain is never truly dependent on others."

When Things Get Serious

The toolkit's most important shelf: twelve guides for the moments nobody prepares you for — stopped by police, a car accident, a lost job, a mental health crisis, a scam, a housing emergency. Quick response cards for the moment itself, deeper guidance for afterwards, and emergency numbers localised across six countries. No wit here; just steady hands.

Who It's For

Pocket Butler is written for young adults, roughly 17 to 30 — the stretch of life where you're suddenly expected to know how to negotiate a rental, read a payslip, feed yourself something that isn't beige, and behave impeccably at a dinner you didn't want to attend.

It's for the school leaver moving out, the uni student living on instinct and instant noodles, the first-jobber decoding workplace politics, and the twenty-something who has quietly realised that adulthood arrived without a manual.

And it adapts to where you actually live: seven countries' worth of local money, tax and system details, so the advice about superannuation, National Insurance or 401(k)s is the right advice for you.

Questions People Actually Ask

Is Pemberton a real butler?

Pemberton is a fictional character — a semi-retired English butler with thirty-seven years of (entirely invented) service behind him, complete with a written backstory and a supporting cast below stairs. The character is fiction; the guidance is not. Every module, checklist and tool teaches real, practical life skills, delivered in his voice: dry wit, warmth, and zero judgement.

Who is the app for?

It is written for young adults aged roughly 17 to 30 — the years of first rentals, first payslips, first kitchens and first tax returns. That said, nobody checks your age at the door, and Pemberton maintains that the practical arts are teachable at any stage of life.

What can I use for free?

The app is designed so you can start properly without paying: the first money module (The Butler's Guide to Not Being Broke) and the kitchen module (From Chaos to Competence) are free, along with toolkit staples including the Life Hacks Library, Cost to Future You, When in Rome, When Things Get Serious, and the opening levels of the Table Laying Challenge.

Does it work outside Australia?

Yes. The money, home, work, consumer, wellbeing and future-planning modules adapt to seven countries — Australia, the United Kingdom, Ireland, the United States, New Zealand, India and Canada — with local currency, tax and system details. Emergency contacts in When Things Get Serious are localised too.

What is "When Things Get Serious"?

Twelve guides for the situations nobody prepares you for — being stopped by police, a car accident, losing your job, a mental health crisis, being scammed, a housing emergency and more. Each has quick response cards for the moment itself and deeper guidance for what comes next, with emergency numbers localised by country. It is practical first-steps education, not legal or medical advice.

Can I ask Pemberton questions directly?

Yes — Ask Pemberton is the app's AI chat, answering questions on household management, etiquette and life's practical matters in character. There is a small free daily allowance of consultations, with a far more generous allowance included in a Dive Deep Dialogues subscription.

Nobody taught you how to adult. Pemberton is here to fix that.

Start with the Life Ready Audit, or go straight to the money module. Pemberton will be there either way. "At your service."
